CIGAR BOX BULLETIN Volume 55, No. 50 April 9, 2008 President RICHARD LIMBACHER opened the meeting at 9:29 AM. MIKE RYAN led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and CHUCK LIVINGSTON, ably abetted by PETER RYAN on the piano, conducted the group in the singing of God Bless America, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Carolina in the Morning. The President reported that BOB MEYER has lost a brown Polo zipper jacket for the second time and would appreciate its return. In its place he is holding the only remaining outerwear left after last week’s meeting, a weather proof brown suede jacket. Please communicate with BOB if you have any information concerning the missing jacket. BILL DYNAN, Recording/Corresponding Secretary, reviewed the highlights of last week’s CBB and enlightened the assemblage with respect to definitions of a variety of medical terms (referred to him by DOM COGLIANDRO as part of a Humorous Medical Dictionary and by HARRY TWITCELL as Redneck Medical Terms). A brief sampling includes “Caesarean Section”- a neighborhood in Naples, Italy; “Enema”- not a friend; “Impotent”- distinguished/well-known; and “Terminal Illness”- becoming sick at the airport. ANNOUNCEMENTS: DICK RADCLIFFE reminded us of the upcoming performances of the Greenwich Symphony on Saturday, April 12 at 8 PM and Sunday, and April 13 at 4 PM. Works by Smetana, Debussy and Beethoven and a solo performance by renowned pianist John O’Connor are featured. Tickets for RMA members are only $25- sign up on the bulletin board or identify yourself as an RMA member at the ticket desk at the time of the performance. TIM NOLAN conducted a quiz of the membership concerning the next Romeo luncheon- the correct answers were May 7, 2008, the Milbrook Club, $35 and specially prepared cod/ sliced filet with dessert a surprise (please contact TIM if you need help with the questions!). SAM YORK is seeking volunteers to assist with parking at two locations off Bible Street in connection with the May Gardeners’ Market being held on Saturday, May 3 at the Garden Education Center. The Market is being held from 9AM-1PM and volunteers are needed for two shifts- 8:30 AM-11 AM’ and 11 AM-1:30 PM. RETURNEES: STEVE MARINO from Rome, Italy; LOU CHIAPPETTA from Fort Myers, FL; ROSS FRANK from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; GRIFF GRIFFIN from Australia, Bali, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong; BILL EUSTIS from Sanibel, FL; and CARL VAN AKEN from Tucson, AZ and Los Altos, CA. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Visiting: CHUCK STANDARD reported that HOWARD HENNINGTON continues to reside at the King Street Nursing Home, is in good spirits and welcomes visitors. BOB PREIS is at home and likes visitors although communication is somewhat difficult. JOHN LYONS is at home- he has some difficulty communicating but has an amplifier on his phone and might appreciate a call. Program: JOHN DE CSEPEL announced that the Program Committee would meet today on the third floor of the “Y” immediately following the meeting and that a training session for those interested in becoming cameramen for Channel 79 (Greenwich’s Public Access station) would be held at Town Hall tonight starting at 7:00 PM. JOHN also announced that STUART ADELBERG, President of the United Way of Greenwich would be today’s speaker and BRIAN FORROW identified next week’s speaker as PETER TESEI, First Selectman of the Town of Greenwich who, after recently completing his first 100 days in office, will be ready for members’ questions. JIM THOMPSON, newly of Channel 79, reviewed the station’s extensive programming plans and expressed Channel 79’s desire to provide good local coverage for the enjoyment of all residents. Membership: JIM FAHY reported 118 in attendance, 112 members, 5 candidates (BOB PHELPS, PETER UHRY, CHARLIE MOSHER, BOB BRADY and DON CONWAY) and 1 guest (TED KRAMER, guest of RICH LIMBACHER). We serenaded 5 birthday boys: SANDY BUCHSBAUM (81), BILL VANNEMAN (99), HARRY LEBIEN (83), MARTIN WAINE (75), and HUGH GARNETT (82). Special Events: TOM HEALY updated the planned trip to Belmont Race Track on May 29th. Volunteers: STEVE MARINO reported that 816 hours were volunteered to outside agencies by 57 men, and 140 hours to RMA duties by 26 men. TODAY’S INDUCTEE: PETER UHRY, a longtime Riverside resident with a distinguished career first in merchandizing and then in advertising in the publishing industry was unanimously inducted as a new member following presentations on his behalf by sponsor MIKE RYAN and co-sponsor BOB OPPENHEIMER. PETER has been active in a number of local associations. He and his wife are avid outdoors people and veteran travelers. Welcome PETER! Birthdays- PLAYTIME: Bridge: KURT SCHAFFIR reported that 5 players participated on Wednesday, April 2 with the 3 highest scores being- FRANK HENDERSON (2930), KURT SCHAFFIR (2910) and BOB CHURCH (2660). Bowling: DOM DEPASQUALE reported the following scores for Tuesday, April 8: BOB OPPENHEIMER- 143; DOM COGLIANDRO- 146; LOU CHIAPPETTA- 147; DANA LOW- 152; and DOM himself- 196. Golf: ROGER PIERCE advised that six foursomes had ventured out at the Griff on RMA opening day. DICK BARTHOLOMEW had Closest to the Pin on the 7th hole and the Longest Drive on 17. ED BURNS tee shot on 15 was Closest to the Pin. PETER RYAN and DICK BARTHOLOMEW both posted commendable scores of 84. Captains for Tuesday, April 15 are BILL DYNAN, DICK BARTHOLOMEW, JIM SANTORA, MIKE RYAN, TOM HEALY and ERF PORTER. Tennis: DICK BARTHOLOMEW reported the results of play on Friday, April 4: Court 1- MIKE SMITH won 14 of 21 games (66.7%); Court 2- BILL HOWLAND won 12 of 17 (70.6%); and Court 3- JIM DANIEL won 13 of 18 (72.2%). Captains for Friday, April 11 are: Court 1- BOB PHILLIPS, Court 2- PAUL LEVINE, and Court 3- TED SPOOL. TODAY'S PROGRAM: STUART ADELBERG, President of the United Way of Greenwich, addressed the group concerning the role of the United Way in the Greenwich community. He emphasized the important functions of the United Way in both quantifying the needs of the community with regard to human services and evaluating the quality of services provided. He explained the growing needs in Greenwich for services for the elderly and the young, the presence of diversity in the community and pressures created by high housing costs in the town which have outstripped income increases particularly for those providing public services. He said the United Way budget for the current year is $3.2 million and this amount is approximately 50% funded by Leadership gifts, the remainder coming from a number of sources including gifts from businesses and professional firms.
