CIGAR BOX BULLETIN Volume 57, No. 5 June 3, 2009 Our shiny-new Prexy, JOHN CRAINE, rang the old bell calling us to order, and promptly was cheered and/or booed on the announcement of a $2 day. After BOB CAREY led us in the pledge, with MIKE HAUPTMAN at the lap-piano and TOM HEALY conducting, we sang America the Beautiful, Carolina in the Morning, and Way Down Yonder in New Orleans, one of whose rhymes was “beautiful queens ( no comment).” BILL, the jokemeister, DYNAN recalled that the Y still needs a few volunteers for many activities and that DON WALTON’s memorial service will be 27 June, 4pm at 1st Cong. in OG. BILL then told a well-received joke about a bettin’ granpa and the IRS ( I wish I could do that!). ANNOUNCEMENTS: Gloria Meyering of the Women’s Club expressed the thanks of the club for all the volunteer help for the recent house tour event. Joan Murphy then described the many activities and charities of the club, which is going into its 50th year, and asked us to recommend it. ERF PORTER talked about the end-of-June trip to Gettysburg for a tour and premier of Gran Burgess’ new musical ‘Battle Cry.’ Arrangements are being finalized. Then he discussed the 15 June charity golf event at the Griff; two sessions are planned: 11:30am with lunch and 2:30pm with dinner. He also said FRANK HENDERSON’s wife, Betty, is in hospice. Before breaking for coffee, JOHN CRAINE announced that latecomers arriving after the Cigar Box collection are welcome to add their $2 to the kitty. TODAY’S PROGRAM: PETER SCHIEFERDECKER introduced Dr. William F. Baker, whose face is very familiar to Channel 13 watchers where he had been CEO for many years. Dr. Baker leads a very busy retirement as visiting prof. at Columbia’s B school, at Harvard and as University Professor at Fordham U. He is co-author of a new book “Leading with Kindness” which shows his background in Industrial Psychology, where he earned his doctorate. He is also doing a documentary on the collapse of journalism, meaning newspapers. His talk centered on the effects and differences of the stereotypical “bully” manager vs. the “kind” manager. These effects range from health issues of subordinates to the success or failure of the company. Many good questions followed. A most welcome and informative talk.
