CIGAR BOX BULLETIN
Volume No. 51, No. 16 August 20, 2003
Our beloved President, Linn Grim, as usual, opened the meeting on time. Joe Favano led the pledge and Ernest Banker was great on the piano while Bob Church led us in America the Beautiful, Avalon (surprisingly written by Al Jolson) and Ida! Sweet as Apple Cider. Rec Sec Bill Dynan reported on the events of the previous week and noted that his first name is Bill, not Peter as mistakenly shown in some previous bulletins (sorry about that). Ben Bacon read a card written by Emmett Eaton from Denmark noting an interesting photo, He then told a joke about a drunken bus passenger who insults a mother and her baby and how the bus driver tried to console the dejected mother.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Dom DiMaio noted that copies of the Veterans' Videos will be made available at a very economical cost, Bob Church is working on it and will have them ready soon, Sam Marasso reminded us that the picnic is Sept. 18 and that non-residents will have to pay $6 to enter the park but that there will be no charge for parking, Tim Nolan said the ROMEO lunch is September 10 at the Belle Haven Club which will cost $30. If interested you must sign up by Aug. 27th.

TODAY'S PROGRAM: Sam Marasso introduced Dr. Larry Leverett, the Greenwich Superintendent of Schools. His subject was "The New Vision for Greenwich Schools". He talked about the progress that has been made in the Greenwich school system in recent years. For example, there has been a significant increase in the high school SAT scores, and the participation in the advanced placement class program has increased several times over in the last few years. His goal is to make the Greenwich school system the standard of excellence for the nation. Sounds good. Of course he couldn't get away without answering a couple of questions about the Cos Cob School conflict. He expects to have more participation and dialogue to avoid these type of conflicts in the future.
